| The Great Staircase |
| |
|
The main floor can be reached by climbing an ample staircase. A small but extremely refined statue of Venus, by Angelo Marinali, stands in a niche under the lower flight. On the ground floor standing, we meet for the first time the plump and mellow stucco decorations typical of many rooms in the palace. The frescoed tondi show the images of some gods of the Greek and Roman pantheon. On the first standing, there are four statues attributed to the sculptor Andrea Paracca, from the Valsolda valley. The first two represent the Spring and the Summer; the god Bacchus, with a bunch of grapes in his hand, represents the Autumn; the Winter is represented by an old man who gets some heat from a brazier. By climbing to the second standing, one reaches the main floor. |
